Everton’s points deduction has been reduced from 10 to six points, piling further pressure on the Bees

As Brentford prepares for an unpredictable relegation battle, Christian Norgaard has lashed out at the Premier League, calling the administrators out for “messing with people’s lives.”

Everton’s punishment for breaking financial fair play regulations was lowered on Monday from ten points to six, which was sufficient to move Sean Dyche’s team above Brentford even before the latter team’s loss to West Ham last night.

Following a crushing 4-2 loss at the London Stadium, which marked the Bees’ fifth loss in six games, Thomas Frank’s team is currently just two spots above the relegation zone despite having played one more game than Luton, who are five points worse off in 18th position.

Nevertheless, with both Everton and 17th-place Nottingham Forest facing new profit and sustainability charges, the situation might alter once more before the season ends.

“It’s hard for me to comment on these deductions,” said Brentford captain Norgaard. “Somewhere, someone is sitting with a calculator and putting in points, taking away points. I don’t know. It’s people’s jobs, people’s lives they’re messing with.

“I don’t know what’s going on, to be fair. We have to focus on us, not on Everton. I’m sure we will improve and I’m sure we will find ourselves safe in the Premier League when all is said and done, but there are things we have to talk about and improve.”

RThe additional breaches by Forest and Everton will be heard in court next month, but since both teams can contest any penalties, there is worry that the case won’t be resolved until the end of the season.

There is even a possibility that any sanctions will not be finalised until after the last day of the season on May 19, meaning the relegation contenders face uncertainty over what exactly it will take to beat the drop.

“We can’t rely on other things, like hoping Everton get [more] points dropped,” fellow Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt added. “We have to focus on ourselves to get the points and try our best to stay in the League.”
