Leeds United’s summer 2023 transfer window is starting to look more and more efficient every week.

After being relegated, the Whites lost a number of players to loans or permanent deals. Of those, only Djed Spence’s early contract termination may be considered a failure.
Thus far, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, and Glen Kamara appear to be the best of the group; but, Ilia Gruev has also gained attention lately. Sam Byram and Joel Piroe have also contributed.

Ampadu, who left Chelsea for £7 million in the summer, is getting ready for his first reunion with the team tomorrow. Of the players on that list, he is arguably the most notable.

Journalist Nizaar Kinsella, who originally broke the story of his move to Elland Road, has now stated Leeds defeated “great competition” from throughout Europe for the 23-year-old, ahead of his return to Stamford Bridge.

Leeds saw off stiff competition for Ampadu

Ampadu was the first signing of the 49ers era and to prise him to the Championship amid competition from top European clubs was clearly a signal of intent from the owners.

Kinsella also tweeted that he was ‘reliably informed’ Ampadu has been ‘outstanding’ for Leeds and that is certainly the case, having played all but one minute of every league match this season.

Ampadu has been given the armband in recent weeks due to Pascal Struijk’s absence and Liam Cooper’s benching, a role he has thrived in.

Although Ampadu started the season as a central midfielder and covered for Struijk when he was injured, he has continued to perform well after moving to the rear.

In addition to players like Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville, Ampadu is a strong contender for Leeds’ player of the year award in May.
