Leicester City are projected to be one of the Championship clubs most affected by the impending Africa Cup of Nations this season.

The 24 contending teams have until January 3 to name their final 27-man squad. However, some nations have already made their final picks in preparation for the competition.
The competition runs from January 13 to February 11, with the final taking place at Abidjan’s Alassane Ouattara Stadium. It was originally scheduled to take place in the summer, but it was changed due to fears that it would coincide with the rainy season.

City already knows that defender Harry Souttar would be unavailable in January after being called up to the Australian side for the competition. The campaign goes until February 10, although they could be missing up to four players when the AFCON begins.

Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho have been included to Nigeria’s initial 40-man roster, as expected. The tournament’s final team is anticipated to be named at any time, with both Ndidi and Iheanacho expected to be included.

Ghana has only released a preliminary 55-man squad for the competition. Abdul Fatawu is on that list, but whether he makes the final squad remains to be seen. The 19-year-old has been on the fringes of the group for the last several international holidays, but his form for City could see him receive the nod.

Zambia, like Nigeria and Ghana, is yet to make an official announcement on the final team. Striker Patson Daka, on the other hand, is a mainstay in the team and is anticipated to travel to the tournament with his country.

Kelechi Iheanacho has suffered a muscle injury and is waiting to discover the severity of it

After suffering a muscular injury, Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations has been called into question.

The Nigerian international was absent from City’s squad for the 2-0 win over Cardiff, and Enzo Maresca stated after the game that he had suffered an injury in the aftermath of the Boxing Day tie with Ipswich. That revelation comes on the same day that Iheanacho was nominated to Nigeria’s 27-man roster for the Afcon, which begins in two weeks.

The severity of the striker’s injury is unknown because it is still being evaluated. But if it is serious, Maresca says he will not be able to represent his country in the Ivory Coast competition.
