Spain v England: Final - UEFA EURO 2024

According to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph, Newcastle United is thinking about making a further attempt to recruit Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi during the January transfer window.

After spending much of the summer trying to secure the 24-year-old England international, Newcastle were unable to meet Palace’s £70 million asking price.

While those efforts to sign Guehi failed miserably, Newcastle are prepared to make another attempt in the winter window with an expectation for the Eagles to lower their hefty demands.

That said, the Magpies chances to finalize the deal may depend entirely on whether Palace is actually willing to lower their valuation of the player as the center-back gets closer to his contract’s expiring date.

Guehi’s current deal runs through June 2026, which gives Palace some negotiating leverage, but it also puts pressure on the club to avoid the risk of losing him for free if they cannot secure a contract extension or facilitate a transfer.

Palace may face a decision in January about whether to lower their price or hold firm in hopes of convincing Guehi to commit to a longer-term future at Selhurst Park.

Whether Guehi arrives or not, nobody knows. One thing is for certain, though, and that’s the fact that Newcastle will need to stay impeccably healthy for the campaign if they want to avoid falling short of options in the middle of their defense at some point later this season.
