In light of recent events surrounding Sandro Tonali’s alleged involvement in illegal betting, it’s evident that the 23-year-old Italian is likely enduring significant mental stress. During Eddie Howe’s morning press briefing, it was revealed that Tonali, while handling the situation well, remains emotionally affected by the ongoing turmoil.

Given the jeopardy his entire career faces, it’s entirely understandable. While his career may not come to an end, it’s worth noting that a footballer’s professional lifespan is relatively short, and being suspended for one to three years can represent a substantial portion of it.

What raises eyebrows is that NUFC.co.uk has coincidentally posted a job advertisement for a Player Care and Family Liaison Officer today.

As mentioned by Howe earlier, it’s not only Sandro Tonali who is grappling with this situation, but his family as well. Consequently, having dedicated personnel in place to provide support to the players and their families from a non-footballing perspective is a commendable move.

The job description outlines the role as follows:

‘Joining a busy and welcoming team, you will offer proactive and high-level practical assistance to the 1st team playing squad, coaches, and their families. Your aim is to foster a warm and inviting environment that aligns with our club’s values.

You will establish and manage a family program to create a friendly and inclusive community. Additionally, you will design, implement, and oversee a suitable 1st team education and development structure, encompassing group discussions and individual support.’

While it’s possible that this role was already in development at Newcastle, the timing undeniably raises some questions.”
