Newcastle United has announced that Sandro Tonali, a midfield player, is the subject of an investigation into unlicensed betting.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Italian Prosecutors Office are looking into the 23-year-old for breaking betting regulations, the club announced in a statement. If proven guilty, he might have a protracted suspension from football.

The Italian international, who is cooperating with the investigation, and his family have the full support of the Premier League team.

It happens after the Turin Public Prosecutors Office sent him and Aston Villa striker Nicolo Zaniolo, who is on loan, home from a national team training camp at the Federal Technical Center in Coverciano.

Nicolo Fagioli, a midfield player for Juventus, was suspended for seven months on October 17th by the FIGC for breaking betting regulations.

Newcastle paid £55 million to recruit Tonali from Milan in July.
