Newcastle United are allegedly considering bringing in a new central midfielder in January.

The Magpies could make a bid for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay. This comes after Newcastle player Sandro Tonali was investigated by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation for unlawful betting activity.

“Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities,” Newcastle wrote in a statement.

“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support.”

The Magpies then stated that, due to this ongoing process, they’ll be making no further comment on the situation at present.

Sources have indicated that Newcastle won’t hesitate to reinforce the squad depth in January to make up for any suspension-related absence. While Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is considered to be a top target, the Magpies may also be interested in McTominay.

Could Newcastle make a play for the Manchester United and Scotland star?

Currently, the 26-year-old is a squad rotation player. He appeared in 39 games for Manchester United last season, but just 16 of those were starts. This appears to be the case again this season. In 2023-24, the alleged Newcastle target has six appearances, two of which have been starts.

Scotland, on the other hand, has McTominay playing the entire 90 minutes in their previous seven matches and even captaining the country against France. Diego Simeone named him one of the “best midfielders in the world” alongside Paul Pogba last year.

Man United is said to value McTominay at approximately £40 million. That’s not a lot of money for a midfielder of his caliber in his prime. Newcastle could do a lot worse than bring him to St James’ Park in January.
