Leicester Manager Enzo Maresca Urges VAR Introduction in Championship, Citing Game-Enhancing
When Enzo Maresca demanded that VAR be implemented in the Championship, English football fans’ spines tingled.
The Leicester manager, who has experience on both sides of the issue and worked with coaching staffs at West Ham and Manchester City, feels technology advances the game.
However, a lot of second-tier supporters would disagree with VAR because of its controversy and stoppages. After recent games at Ipswich and Coventry, when he believed crucial rulings went against the Championship leaders, Maresca has a beef with the referees.
‘It’s a little bit of a mixed feeling,’ he said. ‘In the Championship when you see a goal you can celebrate because you know nothing will happen to change it. Last year and in the years when I used VAR, you are always waiting, waiting, because you don’t know if there is something (to disallow it).

‘In terms of the immediate reaction, yes, it’s more enjoyable. In the end though, you can see more things with VAR and it’s much better for the game.
In Italy and Spain’s second level, video assistant referees are used. I’m not sure why, but we don’t have it here. I think it’s helpful.
Although VAR has been utilized in several Carabao Cup games and in the Football League play-off finals, it has not yet been implemented into regular fixtures in the Championship or Leagues One and Two.
Championship clubs debated whether to implement a more limited version of VAR this season, but they opted against it because of the annoyance it has created in the premier league.
Nonetheless, a few EFL managers concur with Maresca. “The EFL needs VAR at the earliest opportunity as the officiating is not at the level it needs to be,” Stevenage manager Steve Evans stated in October of last year.
