Hayden Hackney, an England Under-21 international, excelled in 2023 for his hometown team.

The North East Football Writers’ 2023 Young Player of the Year is Hayden Hackney, a key player. The midfielder for Middlesbrough was selected above Jack Clarke of Sunderland and Lewis Miley of Newcastle United.

Hackney, who was born in Redcar, made a name for himself last season and became an essential member of Michael Carrick’s squad. He was highly praised for his exceptional work in the engine room and was a key player in their push for promotion.

Following in the footsteps of David Wheater, Joe Bennett, Jason Steele, Ben Gibson, and Marcus Tavernier, Hackney became the sixth player from Boro to be recognized in the sixteen years the prize has been given out. Hackney began attending the club’s academy at the under-10 level and signed his first professional contract in June 2019. Jonny Howson, his midfield partner, was the last Middlesbrough winner of the NEFWA awards. In 2020, Howson won the Player of the Year award.

Since returning from injury, Hackney, an England Under-21 international, has played in three of Boro’s games. He scored the game-winning goal in their first-leg victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semifinal. With 23 games played thus far this season, he has three goals to his credit.

The player of the year award went to Kieran Tripper of Newcastle United, who defeated Clarke and Joelinton, his teammate at the Magpies. Sarah Robson, a defender for Durham Women and Northern Ireland, won the women’s senior award for the third consecutive year.
