Kalvin Phillips has made it clear to Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola that he wants to join Newcastle United in January.

The 28-year-old is expected to be one of the big-name players to leave next month. Phillips has spent the majority of this season on the bench for Manchester City. Guardiola has only used the midfielder 10 times in all competitions, for a total of 318 minutes.

Only 89 of Phillips’ minutes have come in Premier League games, with four appearances to date. In addition, he has not begun a top-flight fixture in 2023/24. The England international has only started one Champions League match, a 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Newcastle.

Manchester City will not prevent Phillips from departing in January, but they are having difficulty reaching an agreement with Newcastle. The Premier League rivals are at odds over the terms of his move to St James’ Park. Manchester City has urged Newcastle to accept a purchase obligation.

Newcastle’s main goal in January is to sign Phillips on loan for the rest of the 2023/24 season. Tyneside officials are willing to include an option to acquire the £165k-a-week anchor, whom Guardiola has described as ‘outstanding,’ next summer if necessary. However, a dry loan is their goal.

Newcastle and Manchester City are still negotiating his transfer.

After Phillips cleared the path, negotiations to bring him to Newcastle in January are still ongoing. According to TEAMtalk, Juventus is still interested in signing him but is not currently a contender. Manchester City is now attempting to reach an agreement with the Toon.
