Billy Sharp has given an explanation for why, following a heated FA Cup match, he ended up infuriating Wrexham supporters and squaring off with Phil Parkinson.
The former Sheffield United striker faced the Red Dragons in the 2022–23 FA Cup’s fourth round. After a terrifying fright at SToK Racecourse, the Blades pulled off a thrilling last-second victory in an intense replay at Bramall Lane. Sharp scored the game-winning goal and gained notoriety for his post-match theatrics, including a furious altercation with Wrexham manager Parkinson and gestures towards the away crowd.

Detailing the sequence of events, Sharp shared with Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast, “I’m known for engaging with fans – I banter a lot, take it as much as I give. Wrexham fans were fantastic that day, loud and supportive. The FA Cup holds personal significance for me as Sheffield United’s captain. I wanted to win, and Wrexham also showed immense desire. A few incidents occurred, including a red card in the first leg and our last-minute goal. There was media coverage and a documentary, with everyone cheering for Wrexham’s cup run. I aimed to reach the FA Cup semi-final and eventually did, playing at Wembley for the first time.”
Regarding the confrontation with Parkinson, Sharp explained, “After the game, I went to my family, blew a kiss to my kids, and engaged in banter with Wrexham fans. Parkinson approached, agitated about my banter. I’ve had previous clashes with him, but no grudge. There was no need for him to intervene. He was protecting his fans. Paul Mullin joined the banter, and Tozer was involved throughout the game, not just with me but other players too.”
Sharp’s next football destination is yet unknown, although after leaving the MLS, a spectacular move to Wrexham is a real possibility. It would be interesting to see how he will be received in North Wales following his shenanigans during the FA Cup.
