Dan Neil, a midfielder for Sunderland, has scored three goals thus far this year.

Tony Mowbray thinks Dan Neil is headed for a successful career as a Premier League football player and that his team’s decision to use him more forward this season is paying off.

After Corry Evans’ ACL injury last season, Neil frequently moved into the holding midfield position; but, this season, he has been given much more attacking duty.

Mowbray acknowledges the attention Dan Neil is receiving due to his outstanding performances, with the 21-year-old already providing three assists this season. The head coach believes Neil is on the path to becoming a Premier League midfielder, ideally with Sunderland in the near future. Neil extended his contract earlier this year, as he aspires to help his childhood club return to the top flight.

“Dan Neil has accumulated significant playing time, and I believe he’s highly regarded,” stated Mowbray. “He’s likely on the cusp of involvement with England’s youth teams due to his consistent performance and ability to score, as he’s already netted a couple of goals this season.”

“He needs to maintain this because he must grab people’s attention. As a midfielder who consistently scores ten or more goals each season, your path leads to the Premier League.

“It’s incredibly valuable because teams seek goals from all positions. If you’re a central midfielder who can penetrate the opponent’s box, shoot, and regularly find the back of the net, your transfer value skyrockets.

“Dan is relishing his more advanced role this season, and with the goals flowing, he complements his overall skill set. He exhibits great composure on the ball, can carry it forward, execute long passes, and provide crucial passes through the lines for our team.”

Neil is poised to play a pivotal role as Sunderland seeks to overcome the frustration of their recent goalless draw with Swansea City when they face Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light this weekend.
