As the injuries pile up, Newcastle United has suffered yet another setback

Newcastle United is poised to miss out on the services of Matt Targett in their upcoming Premier League clash against Arsenal on Saturday evening (kick-off 5:30 pm).

The left-back had only made his third start of the 2023-24 season in the Carabao Cup match against Manchester United on Wednesday when he suffered a hamstring injury within the initial three minutes of the game.

Miguel Almiron stepped in to replace Targett and went on to score the opening goal in the 26th minute. Subsequent goals from Lewis Hall and Joe Willock secured a victory for the Magpies, propelling them into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United manager, commended the players for their tremendous performance, despite the setback. He expressed, “It was a massive performance from the players, I can’t credit them enough. Some great stories emerged from our perspective.”

Nevertheless, the injury to Matt Targett was a significant setback. Howe commented on the situation, saying, “The only negative was Matt Targett, that was a huge blow for us early in the game. Even more credit to the players for the response after that moment and some giant performances from the players.”

When asked for an update on Targett’s condition, Howe expressed his perplexity regarding the cause of the injury, describing it as “bizarre.” He noted that the injury occurred early in the game, with Targett not experiencing fatigue. Targett’s action of stretching his leg to make a tackle led to the injury, and the moment he hit the ground, he signaled to the sideline that he was in pain.

Howe further added, “It looks like a hamstring, which would be a huge blow… The only hope for me is he wasn’t really running at the time. Sometimes they’re the worst ones when you’re in an explosive action, but still, he was in pain, and he’s struggling to walk now. It doesn’t look good.”

Targett’s absence contributes to Newcastle’s growing list of sidelined players, which currently numbers nine.

Sandro Tonali – August 2024
Tonali faces a 10-month suspension from football due to an investigation into unauthorized betting activities conducted by the Italian Football Federation.

Alexander Isak – Chelsea (H) – 25/11
Isak was forced to exit the match against Dortmund just 14 minutes in, aggravating his recurring groin injury. He has undergone a scan and is not expected to return until at least the November international break.

Jacob Murphy – TBC
There are concerns that Murphy may require surgery for his dislocated shoulder suffered against Dortmund.

Sven Botman – N/A
Botman has been absent from the past seven matches due to a knee problem. Newcastle is awaiting further details on his injury, and no return date is currently available.

Lewis Miley – Borussia Dortmund (A) – 07/11
Miley has been battling glandular fever and is likely to remain sidelined for at least another week.

Harvey Barnes – late December
Barnes is not expected to return to action until late December after sustaining a foot injury during last month’s 8-0 victory against Sheffield United.

Elliot Anderson – late December
Following the loss to Dortmund, it was confirmed that Anderson missed the game due to a back issue that is anticipated to keep him out for eight weeks.

Javier Manquillo – N/A
Prior to the Carabao Cup match against Manchester United, manager Howe revealed that Manquillo is dealing with a groin problem.
