Positive first impressions of Philippe Clement include his honest and straightforward communication style; however, one comment made during his inaugural news conference may have an effect on Borna Barisic.
Despite receiving criticism for his performance against Turkey, the Croatian international has now amassed 35 caps following this break and has started both of his nation’s matches.
A loss to Wales won’t have done much to revive confidence in him, since Philippe Clement stated during his first news conference that he wants Borna Barisic to be the kind of player that Rangers has never had.
It’s easy to see how Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz differ tactically. The latter is more reckless and daring, therefore he takes more chances and makes more blunders.
The young Turk looks to play passes through the lines, sprints behind the opposition’s defense, and tries to take players on. On the other hand, when Borna Barisic makes his Rangers debut, Clement issues the following cautionary statement via Rangers TV:
“It is about putting the right goals towards games and the right things they have to do and I want players who are also not afraid to fail and make mistakes because that is part of football.
“There is not one team in the world who are perfect in everything they do but they react correctly to mistakes.”
When Ridvan misplaces a pass, he doesn’t let his head drop; instead, he attempts to recover the ball and maintains an attack-minded demeanor. Borna Barisic’s fear of taking risks during Rangers games in the past has been widely observed, and the team’s loss to Kilmarnock on opening day served as a prime illustration.
All too frequently, he opts for simplicity, returning to the center halves or playing a hopeful cross from deep that finds no one to score against. Although Barisic is still one of the best ball crossers in the game, what good is it if he is always looking over his shoulder and doesn’t get high enough on the pitch?
For too long, we have played too cautious, especially in midfield. If we want to move past the mistakes of the past, we need more players like Ridvan who share Clement’s values.
