The desire of Oldham Athletic to develop and make a comeback to the English Football League is what drew Micky Mellon to take over as manager of the team.

Mellon, who most recently oversaw Tranmere earlier in 2023, was appointed on Friday for a three-year term.

After being demoted from the EFL in 2022, the Latics are in their second season in the National League, currently ranked 12th.

“We get together at a really pleasant moment,” he said to BBC Radio Manchester.

“I’ve had a lengthy managerial career and have served my time managing in non-league sports. This is a non-league team that was demoted from the English Football League and is now focused on rebuilding its fan base.

It was already expanding when I arrived. I get to carry on and expand on the work that guys like David Unsworth have started to do to turn things around.”

Since his departure from Tranmere in March, after spending two seasons with the League Two team, Mellon has not played football.

The Scot was happy to take some downtime in between employment despite having twice won promotions from the National League, with Fleetwood and Tranmere.

For the first time since I was sixteen or seventeen, I was able to spend six or seven months away from football. I was resolved to make the most of that time and reconnect with my family,” he continued.

“I went out and rediscovered the way I wanted to do things but I was always determined to come back in when there was something that excited me.”
