A greater talent than Brennan Johnson is already available for the Lilywhites to sign…

Despite significant summer spending by Tottenham Hotspur, it appears Ange Postecoglou is dissatisfied with his present team.

Who could Spurs sign this winter?

They had strengthened important positions, with the additions of Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, and James Maddison being the three standouts. However, there was still one glaring transfer error: they had not even made an attempt to replace Harry Kane.

Since the Lilywhites had previously made significant purchases, none of the £100 million obtained was used to acquire a replacement striker, forcing Heung-min Son to fill in for Richarlison outside of his natural position.

With rumours in Spain indicating their renewed interest in LOSC Lille marksman Jonathan David, this January may be the ideal time to make amends.

It is anticipated that a sum comparable to the €60 million (£52 million) that was put on his head in the summer will be required to wrest this lethal weapon from France. But doing so would represent a significant improvement over their previously reported Deadline Day purchase, that man Johnson.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

The £47.5 million spent to bring in Nottingham Forest was a significant investment, but at 22 years old, it was also an investment in the future.

The Wales international had just had an amazing season in which he had scored eight goals in his first Premier League season and provided assists for three more.

Given that Postecoglou was anticipating a lot from his explosive speed and versatility across the front line, as well as the fact that he averaged 1.4 shots and 0.8 critical passes per game the previous campaign, it is obvious that the opposition will find it difficult to deal with him.

And yet, he pails in comparison to David, who has been consistently shining at the top level for years now, despite being just one year older than the young winger.

How deadly is Jonathan David?

The Canadian international had a particularly impressive season last year, scoring 24 goals in Ligue 1—only Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette scored more. This occurred a year after he had once again scored 15 goals in the league, including three goals in the Champions League as they lost to Chelsea in the round of 16.

To all Canadians, enjoy Jonathan David. Podcaster Tony Marinaro would go even further, asserting that the 23-year-old was among the best forwards in the world: “To all Canadians, enjoy Jonathan David. He has studied the game. He follows all the rules exactly. In a word, he is a phenomenon. Canadian striker is among the greatest in the world.

Brennan Johnson vs Jonathan David
Metric Johnson PL 22/23 David Ligue 1 22/23
Appearances 38 37
Goals 8 24
Assists 3 4
Average Rating 6.70 7.15
Shots per game 1.4 2.9
Key Passes per game 0.8 1.5

Johnson has a lot of potential and is likely to succeed in Postecoglou’s relaxed and upbeat environment, but given David and Johnson’s experience at their respective ages, Johnson’s potential currently isn’t even close to David’s.

The former Genk finisher has already played in 120 Ligue 1 games and has countless appearances in Europe. The £70k a week star for Spurs, meanwhile, has just completed his first season playing in the Premier League.

The two are now incomparable, but should David make the transition, they might end up helping each other by working together to steer the north London team toward a more promising future.
