Emerson Royal, the right-back for Tottenham Hotspur, has been called up to the Brazil team for their World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay on Wednesday.
The Brazilian was left out of the initial roster for this week’s doubleheader of international matches, but Danilo’s injury has left the squad lacking a right-back.
Ange Postecoglou has been using Emerson off the bench even though he hasn’t been a regular in the starting lineup in recent weeks because of Pedro Porro’s stellar play.
The right-back most recently entered the game late to help Spurs win 1-0 against Luton Town even though they were reduced to ten men. Emerson was hand-picked to cover for a missing player in the Brazil squad this week, and he will now forgo Spurs training in favor of a World Cup qualifier, suggesting that he is still well-liked inside the team.
It’s obvious that Postecoglou has a great deal of faith in Emerson to step in and perform well off the bench in trying circumstances. In these kinds of circumstances, the difference between Porro and Emerson is useful since the former is superior in the long run, while the latter can see things through to completion.
