Given his hefty salary at Spurs, the player ought to be shown the door.

Tottenham Hotspur spent a substantial £212.3 million during Ange Postecoglou’s first summer transfer window as manager, but they also acquired some important players who improved the team.

In addition to signing Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro to permanent contracts after they had already been on loan at Spurs, they brought in four first-team players.

The Lillywhites’ most expensive transaction was Brennan Johnson. On the day of the transfer deadline, they acquired the Welshman for a record-breaking £47.5 million from Nottingham Forest, his boyhood club.

For a cost of £40 million, they also acquired Leicester City’s James Maddison. Despite a difficult few weeks, he has had a great season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, tallying eight assists and four goals in the Premier League.

In addition, Spurs strengthened their defense in the summer by completing the £34.5 million signing of Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli and the £17.2 million signing of Mickey van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

Spurs have the opportunity to bolster their roster even more and contend for a Champions League berth the following season with the approaching summer transfer window of 2024.

They may, however, also try to let go of a few of their current players; one midfielder in particular looks certain to depart the team.

What the future holds for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, a Danish international, is the player in question here. With just over a year remaining on his current contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the 28-year-old midfield player could leave this summer.

Heavens In January, Florian Plettenberg of Germany revealed that Hojbjerg might leave, citing rumors of a winter relocation from North London. Juventus was rumored to be among the interested parties, and previous team Bayern Munich was also said to be interested in the transfer.

More recently, Caught Offside has speculated that a transaction involving Hojbjerg may set prospective suitors back by about £20 million. It has been reported that Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Napoli, among other Serie A teams, are interested in signing the Dane.

Under Postecoglou, Hojbjerg has found it difficult to get regular playing time this season. The 28-year-old has made 34 Premier League appearances. Nevertheless, he has only started seven games, and he averages 36 minutes per contest, according to Sofascore.

Unsurprisingly, the Denmark international wants to play more football next season, hence his potential move away from Spurs. However, his large wage could create an issue when finding a new club.

Indeed, the 28-year-old midfielder is earning more money than some of Spurs’ biggest stars. Whilst he doesn’t earn close to the £190k-per-week that captain Son Heung-min earns, or the £170k-per-week Maddison is on, he is actually one of the highest earners at the club, according to Capology.

Only three players at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium make more money than Hojbjerg, Son and Maddison included: Timo Werner and Cristian Romero, who each make £165k a week, and Kulusevski, who makes £110k.

At Spurs, Hojbjerg presently receives a weekly salary of £100k, which is more than several of the team’s biggest players, such as Pedro Porro (£75k) and Micky Van de Ven ($50k).

Given their recent performances—Porro and Van de Ven both scored goals in Tottenham’s victory over Burnley on Saturday afternoon—that is especially poignant.

Finding a team ready to match Hojbjerg’s £100k salary could be difficult if Spurs decide to let him go this summer. The player might have to accept a pay decrease in order to secure a long-term position this summer.

Spurs have every reason to want to move the Dane. They may strengthen in the middle of the pitch by investing the £20 million they plan to pay for him this year in another midfield player. Amadou Onana has been connected to them in a £45 million deal.
