Paul Robinson has been surprised by the lack of interest in Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga as he looks set to join Millwall on a permanent transfer.
According to The Mirror [8 May], the Championship side have agreed a deal with Spurs to sign the 25-year-old this summer, though personal terms have not been agreed with the player.
Tanganga joined the Lions on a season-long loan last summer, going on to make 18 appearances and score twice in the Championship, having not played a game for Tottenham since April 2023.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I was surprised that Tanganga moved on, actually.
“He threatened to break into the first team for a while, having been a youngster with a lot of potential. A couple of the other managers gave him an opportunity but he never really took that and put a run of games together.
“Since going to Millwall on loan, he’s done excellently well. I’ve watched Millwall a couple of times and he’s probably been one of their best players this season. For him, to move on and play regular first-team football, he’s another one in the same mould as Joe Rodon.
“He’s not going to get a look-in at Tottenham. Now he’s going to a club like Millwall, where he’s happy and is playing every week. I’m surprised that there are no other clubs that have come in for him.
“I think he will have the opportunity of looking at other clubs as well. But for him, a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would seem ominous.”
Japhet Tanganga set to end Tottenham career as Millwall agree deal
Tanganga will have already learned from Rodon exactly how difficult it is to cement a spot in the current Spurs squad, with the Welshman currently on loan with Leeds United and seeking his own exit.

There is no doubt that the Englishman is a talented centre-back, having broken through into the first-team set-up as a teenager. However, those days are behind him now.
Still, he is certainly good enough to be a solid Championship defender, which is why Millwall are so eager to snap him up. It is just a surprise that other clubs in the division have not thought the same.
