The Terriers announced Warnock’s departure on Monday, just seven games into the Championship season, with the midweek match against Stoke City at home set to be his final in charge in West Yorkshire.

Following a successful finish last season, the former Sheffield United manager was appointed on a one-year agreement, despite previous plans to leave in May. The club has now decided to cut ways with Warnock in order to secure a long-term appointment.

“I must start this statement by, on behalf of everyone at the football club, expressing my huge gratitude to Neil and his assistant, Ronnie Jepson, for the incredible job they have done at the club over the last six months,” Huddersfield chief executive Jake Edwards said.

“Keeping this club in the Championship was nothing short of amazing, given the position the team was in when they arrived in February, and built on their already lasting legacies at this club as a management team and, in Ronnie’s case, as a player as well.” They are both definitely Huddersfield Town icons who have solidified their places in the club’s history.

“When Neil and Ronnie agreed to stay at the club for the new season, our owner, Kevin Nagle, and I were overjoyed.” All parties were conscious that this was not a long-term appointment, but it provided us with crucial football stability while the ownership change was finalized and the new regime established itself at the club.
