For a brief while, Graham Potter, the former manager of Chelsea, appeared to be a strong contender for the Rangers position.

When the heat on Michael Beale was starting to build, the former manager of Brighton was one of the most popular names in the media when it came to Rangers.

You could have been excused for suggesting the former Premier League manager as a good substitute when the strain eventually got to you.

Graham Potter’s team, however, moved quickly to disassociate themselves from the idea that the former Ostersunds manager could take over at Ibrox.

Graham Potter hasn’t had a job since the Rangers evidently moved on fast and sought to secure the capture of Philippe Clement.

Graham Potter looks set to turn down Ajax

That is also expected to go on, according to rumors that Graham Potter is likely to decline the chance to lead Ajax, a team dominated by Dutch football.

After a horrible time at Chelsea, Graham Potter is looking to carefully choose his next post, and he doesn’t think this kind of work is the proper one for him at this point in his career, according to Sky Sports.

According to the article, if Erik ten Hag and Manchester United split ways in the summer, the Englishman will reportedly be considered for the Old Trafford starting spot as his replacement.

Given that Potter turned down Ligue 1 side Lyon at roughly the same time, the idea that he would prefer a return to the Premier League dates all the way back to his connections to Rangers.

Rangers manager success brings Ibrox exit fears

Rangers obviously never sat still and went on to secure the signing of young Belgian manager Philippe Clement.

The former Belgium international has settled in very nicely and has his team in a title fight of epic proportions against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

With the League Cup in the bag and a Hampden Scottish Cup semi-final on the horizon, Big Phil could well lift a treble in his first (partial) season in charge.

Former Rangers chairman Dave King has taken notice of it and believes the Ibrox team would be fortunate to retain Clement if he keeps up his current performance.

King remarked, “I really believe we have a platform now. I just hope we can keep the manager.”

“If you look at it currently, the global manager market—which I am closely following because of the Liverpool situation—where are the good managers?

“Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich are all in need of a manager. I believe that Liverpool will also be looking for a manager.”

“You question yourself, ‘Where are these managers?’ as you glance around. Since there aren’t many truly excellent managers out there, I believe we will have to work hard to hang onto our current manager, especially in light of the fact that [Ange] Postecoglou has performed so well with Spurs as well.

Philippe Clement returns to action on Wednesday night against Dundee, as Graham Potter mulls over the Ajax position and continues to dally over a new contract.
