Tottenham signed Brennan Johnson after Nottingham Forest rejected three offers from Brentford.

A report from the Premier League’s independent commission regarding Forest’s breach of profit and sustainability rules revealed that the Bees submitted three offers in July and August of last year.

On 21 July, Brentford sent a £32.5million offer for the Wales international, but Forest declined this after consultation with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Then on 24 July, Brentford submitted an improved £35million bid for Johnson, which was declined on the same day.

Thomas Frank’s side tried one last time to sign Johnson on 28 August with a £40million bid but their advances were once again rejected.

However, Forest transfer chief Ioannis Vrentzos was then told by Marinakis on the day of Brentford’s final offer to sell Johnson before the end of the transfer window.

Tottenham subsequently agreed a deal with the Reds to sign Johnson for a guaranteed £47.5million on 1 September, the final day of the transfer window.

Forest have since faced a four-point deduction for a break of the league’s financial rules after the independent commission found the club’s 2022-23 losses breached the allowed threshold of £61million by £34.5million.

Forest countered with a £55million price tag, but negotiations did not progress.

Johnson, after a slow start to life in North London, has bagged four goals and six assists in 25 Premier League appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Tottenham sit fifth in the Premier League table after their 3-0 loss to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday (16 March).
