Town manager on Owls trip

Kieran McKenna is well aware of the task ahead as Town prepare to go to Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

The Blues will play at Hillsborough on Saturday in the first game following the international break, against a team promoted from League One last season.Training Ground Guru | Clarity, intensity & fun: Playing under Kieran McKenna at Ipswich

Town are second in the table going into the game, with the Owls still waiting for their first win of the season, but Kieran expects another tight battle after the teams drew 2-2 last season.

“They’ve had a tough start because it’s a really tough league,” he explained to TownTV. “But we know the size of the challenge and it’s not a difficult one for us to get our heads around.”

“We haven’t managed to beat them yet so this is a great chance for us to go and show our development as a team. We know their strengths and a lot of their main players are still there, though they have brought some in, and we know what Hillsborough can be like.

“We’re looking forward to it and it would be a great next step for us to go and put on a performance there and get a result.”

Darren Moore left his role as Wednesday manager following promotion and has been replaced by Xisco Munoz. While Kieran is expecting some slightly different challenges as a result of the change, the Town boss sees the Owls’ home support as another variable to handle.

“Tactically, there’s not so much we can take from last season, because it’s a different manager trying to instill different principles into the team,” he said.

“But there are things with individuals where we know their quality, with a lot of our players competing against theirs for a few seasons now.

“From a mental point of view we have felt what Hillsborough is like. We did brilliantly to get ourselves 2-0 up last year and the stadium felt like it suited us, then they scored with 20 to go and the whole atmosphere changes into one you have to stand up to.

“We have felt both sides of that stadium and we know which one we want to entice on Saturday, but it’s a big challenge and one where we’ll be looking forward to hopefully giving our fans a great day.”
