Manager of the Brazil national team Dorival Junior provided an update on Matheus Cunha’s absence, dealing Wolves a further injury setback.
This season, Wolves have excelled, but not without Gary O’Neill witnessing his team struggle with significant absences.
Pedro Neto’s hamstring ailment kept the Old Gold out of the lineup for nine games earlier in the season. Hwang Hee-chan also missed the Asia Cup due to a niggle.
The management was given cause for concern when Matheus Cunha was forced to leave the game against Brentford in the first half, even though it was great to have players like Hwang and Neto back with the squad.
Cunha hobbled off against the Bees after playing just 20 minutes of the game, and the Wolves camp was clearly nervous.
The Brazilian is unlikely to play again in the 2023–24 campaign, according to a story from Sky Sports that was removed shortly after the match.
Fortunately, O’Neil gave a comforting update on social media, saying that the forward was feeling “optimistic” about playing again. This helped to put an end to the rumors.
“He’s really optimistic and feels good, he’s keen to get back as soon as he can. We haven’t set any timelines.”

What has been said about Matheus Cunha injury timeframe
While the boss wasn’t able to set a timeline on the potential return of the 24-year-old, Brazilian national team coach, Dorival Junior, hinted at just how long Cunha could be out.
Speaking to the media ahead of deciding his squad for the March international break, Junior touched upon the injury to the Wolves dynamo.
As relayed by journalist Fred Caldeira, Junior said:
“The injuries to Alisson, Matheus Cunha and João Pedro remove them from the options for being called up for the games against England and Spain.”
It appears likely that Wolves will be without their star forward until the 23rd and 26th of March, when they play England and Spain.
O’Neil will get his team ready for matches against Brighton in the FA Cup and the Premier League against Sheffield United, Newcastle United, Fulham, and Bournemouth before the international break.
After finally seeing the Brazil international reach “unbelievable” form, as noted by journalist Alex Richards, Cunha’s absence will be greatly missed by the Old Gold.
Although Junior’s remarks don’t reveal when the 24-year-old will return to competitive action domestically, they do offer some insight into how long he might potentially be absent.
