According to Justin Toscano of the AJC, third base prospect David McCabe—Atlanta’s fourth-round draft selection in 2022—had Tommy John surgery this winter.

Playing in both Low A and High A last season at the age of 23, McCabe was already an older prospect for the level he was at, and it now looks like he may miss his entire age 24 season.

Although McCabe’s age is a significant factor in assessing his overall skill, he was extremely successful at both of his trips last year despite being much older than his normal opponent. He recorded a 145 wRC+ in 176 plate appearances in Low A and a 128 wRC+ in 348 plate appearances in High A. When he reached the top minors and faced opponents who were closer to his age, 2024 was going to be a pivotal year for his development. That will now need to wait.
