Matchday Memories: On This Day 2009 – Sky Blue Best Begins But Bristol Babes Bag Draw!

Chris Coleman: Ex-Wales boss rues Euro 2016 near-miss as he eyes overseas role - BBC Sport
On this day (12th September) in 2009 the Sky Blues under manager Chris Coleman had kicked off their Championship season with some confidence recording a 2-1 victory at the Ricoh over Ipswich Town on the opening day and a 2-0 win at Barnsley in their next league game.

However, in between they had blotted their copybook with a single goal extra time defeat at Hartlepool United in the League Cup and since the success against the Tykes had had a difficult time  drawing without score at Doncaster Rovers and losing their last two games. These defeats were at home to Swansea City by the only goal of the game and, last time out, comprehensively by three clear goals at Blackpool. Nevertheless City were still in seventh spot.

Therefore, in today’s game at the Ricoh against Bristol City the Sky Blues were hoping to get back on track for a promotion push. The Bristolians had brought over 2,000 fans with them to boost the 16,449 crowd and both sides were in hope of both points but ultimately disappointed with the 1-1 draw.

The Sky Blues started off well and things looked good as they got the opening goal after eighteen minutes with a headed goal from our striker  Leon Best converting a cross from (now fellow CCFPA member) Marcus Hall and so went in at half-time a goal to the good.

Things quickly changed in the second period, however, as the Robins equalised two minute in from their own striker Nicky Maynard with a vicious shot. In the end the draw was probably a fair result as both sides squandered good chances and the Sky Blues dropped a place to eighth.
