Wolves left back Hugo Bueno achieved a personal milestone this week when he made his debut for Spain’s under-21s.

The 20 year old played 90 minutes of the 1-0 win against Scotland in the European Championship qualifier at home to Scotland on Monday night having been called into the squad for the first time.

The youngster has had to be patient for his opportunities at Wolves so far this season, starting in the win at Everton but having to be content with substitute appearances in the games at Manchester United, at home to Brighton and at Crystal Palace and in the Carabao Cup at home to Blackpool.

He faces tough competition for that left back spot now Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed under Gary O’Neil having not been a regular in the league under Julen Lopetegui last season. O’Neil also has the option of playing Toti on the left of the defence, a role in which the Portuguese international impressed in the later stages of last season.

But Bueno has plenty of time on his side. The defender, who joined the club from Areosa in 2019, was given his first team chance by interim boss Steve Davis last October and has gone on to start 17 games in the Premier League. He’s got plenty of time to develop at Wolves having signed a new four year deal in November, reward for his impact on the first team and progress through the academy under Davis and James Collins.

It appears he his progress hasn’t gone unnoticed, and not just through the Spain under-21 squad. The Telegraph reported RB Leipzig had an offer rejected for Bueno by Wolves in the summer.

Bueno isn’t the only Wolves player who took part in the most recent round of international games. Nelson Semedo started at right back in Portugal’s 9-0 victory over Luxembourg at home on Monday. Jose Sa and Toti were unused substitutes in both that game and the 1-0 triumph in Slovakia on Monday, although Pedro Neto came off the bench against Slovakia.

After serving a two-game international suspension, Matt Doherty began for the Republic of Ireland in their 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in Dublin on Sunday. Meanwhile, Fabio Silva scored one goal and set up another in Portugal’s under-21s’ 3-0 triumph over Andorra on Friday.
