During Friday’s loss to Manchester City, Guglielmo Vicario was enraged with his teammates at Tottenham Hotspur.

After a late goal by Nathan Ake gave Pep Guardiola’s team a well-earned victory in north London, Spurs were eliminated from the FA Cup.

Although they played a strong defense that evening, Ange Postecoglou’s team was far from their best offensively. Tottenham frequently handed up the ball in hazardous situations and found it difficult to play past City’s press.

This season, Guglielmo Vicario has been essential to Tottenham’s style of play, enabling Postecoglou’s team to play out of the back with ease.

However, the 27-year-old was frequently forced to go long on Friday due mainly to City’s intense pressure.

Gold said that Vicario was “going crazy” after having to hoof the ball out for a throw-in, and Vicario wasn’t impressed with his teammate’s attempts to show for the ball.

“There was a moment when Vicario got the ball and he had no one to pass to,” the journalist said. “That is not the Postecoglou system, there is always someone being brave looking for a quick pass but no one was there.

“He had to deliberately boot it out of play to the side and he went mad! I know he got the nickname in Italy, some broadcasters called him ‘Venom’ because he would get so angry on the pitch at things his teammates did or whoever.”

“I haven’t seen him get as angry as he did yesterday,” Gold added. “I think he had a bit of a go at Sess after the end of the Burnley game.

“But this one was probably the angriest I’ve seen him. He went mad at everyone in front of him. It may well have been at [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg but I don’t want to pin it on him if it wasn’t.

“He was going crazy and essentially doing that [gesturing] with his hands as if to say ‘come back’.”

Hojbjerg started as the No.6 in Postecoglou’s midfield three on Friday evening and wasn’t showing for the ball as frequently as he would have been expected to.

The 28-year-old did put in a solid performance on the whole but his reluctance to receive the ball under pressure put Tottenham’s defence under increased pressure.

You can understand why Vicario was furious as the £17 million man usually has a host of options to choose from.

Spurs were simply outplayed on Friday evening and while they weren’t at their best, you have to give City some credit.

Guardiola’s side nullified Tottenham’s approach of playing out from the back and Vicario’s fury would suggest that City’s gameplan worked.
