Burnley has increased its offer to buy Maxime Esteve, a center-back for Montpellier, to £10.2 million with a 15% sell-on clause.

Vincent Kompany wants to bolster his defensive options because the Clarets have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest made a £9.7 million offer for Esteve in January, but Montpellier turned it down.

Esteve, 21, has emerged as one of the brightest young defensive talents in France and has a plethora of suitors with Montpellier determined to keep hold of him until at least the end of the season.

A 6ft 4in centre-back, Esteve’s current contract at the Stade de la Mosson has another two-and-a-half years left to run.

Along with Steve Cooper’s team, Everton and Sassuolo, a Serie A team, have also had their approaches rejected.

He started the season on the bench but has since established himself as a key player for Montpellier, who are now ranked 12th in Ligue 1.
The France U21 team has trained the center back.

Burnley has had a quiet transfer window, which makes sense given that they are five points out of safety.

The lone new addition to the team is striker David Datro Fofana on loan from Chelsea, who scored twice in 17 appearances during the season’s first half at Union Berlin.
