Cristian Romero has given Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham a boost ahead of their game against Sheffield United next weekend, despite concerns over a potential injury while on international duty. The Spurs centre-back, who is returning to Argentina for the first international break of the season, was in action on Thursday evening in his native country as Argentina overcame Ecuador 1-0.

Following an amazing start to the season at club level, Romero was named player of the match following a devastating defensive display in Buenos Aires. Spurs fans were concerned, though, after reports from Argentina claimed that the ex-Atalanta player had suffered a minor injury to his right leg.

It was then alleged that a decision would be made on whether he would stay with the squad and fly to Bolivia for Tuesday’s encounter, or whether he would return to England. It was the last thing Tottenham needed to hear, given Postecoglou’s team is currently weak at center-back following the permanent departure of Davinson Sanchez to Galatasaray.

Despite the doubt surrounding Romero’s fitness following the Ecuador encounter, Argentina and Tottenham were given a significant boost when the defender was photographed in training on Saturday evening. Romero could be seen hugging Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez and another player on the training pitch in photographs posted on the national team’s official website on Twitter.

As national team manager Lionel Scaloni holds a press conference on Sunday before flying for La Paz to face Bolivia, all should be apparent about Romero’s participation in Albiceleste’s second World Cup qualifying match. Scaloni did lavish praise on the Tottenham centre-back, even referring to him as “He-Man” following the win over Ecuador.

“On the contrary, you can’t say much about the game he played. “I think, on top of that, with the people who carry him around, he thinks he’s He-Man, and of course, he’s impressive,” Scaloni remarked, according to Sport Witness.

“He is an incredible center-back,” he added. You have to preserve some trips because jogging 50 or 60 meters is not good, especially because you get exhausted and put the team in a bad position. But, hey, what a game he played… I’d rather he did it than just be. He was really comprehensive.”

If Romero does play in the Bolivia match before returning to Hotspur Way, he will almost certainly start at the heart of Tottenham’s defense against Sheffield United on Saturday, when Premier League action returns after the international break.
