In Newcastle United’s 3-2 loss to Man City, midfielder Bruno Guimaraes was spared a second yellow card, and following his team’s thrilling victory, Rodri lambasted the refereeing.

Referee Chris Kavanagh has come under fire from Rodri for not treating Man City “fairly” during the world champions’ 3-2 victory over Newcastle United.

Although Rodri did not name a specific incident, it is clear to what the City midfielder was referring to when he said that Bruno Guimaraes, who was already on a yellow card, escaped a second caution. In first-half stoppage time, Bruno caught the Spain international Rodri on his toes while he was playing a pass, but the Newcastle playmaker avoided more punishment. Thirty seconds later Rodri shamelessly body checked Bruno and got a booking for his actions.

But City wasn’t the only party feeling betrayed. For example, Ruben Dias stopped Anthony Gordon from attempting to gallop down the left flank as Newcastle tried to build up to City’s opening goal. In less than a minute, Bernardo Silva gave City the lead with an incredible back heel.

Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier immediately lodged complaints with Kavanagh, who was met by angry Geordies yelling ‘1-0 to the referee!’ and ‘You’re not fit to be a referee!). Meanwhile, Dan Burn entered the area where the City players were celebrating and confronted Dias. Even after the visitors’ thrilling comeback triumph, Rodri was the one who spoke out the most against the calling following the game. Howe, for his part, thought it was a “clear foul.”

“To be honest, the referee was unbelievable in a negative way,” he told reporters. “We don’t understand many things that happened. We don’t feel that equal to some behaviours.

“It’s difficult [to stay calm]. The referee doesn’t help much, but we don’t want the help. We just want it to be fair in both directions and I think Saturday they weren’t.”
