The officials for Newcastle United vs. Manchester City have been announced by the Premier League.

The match between Newcastle United and Manchester City at home in the Premier League on Saturday night (kickoff at 5:30 p.m.) will be officiated by Chris Kavanagh.

When the Ashton-under-Lyne-born referee officiated Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw against Everton last week, he found himself at the center of an extremely contentious situation.

Due to his challenge on Nathaniel Clyne, Dominic Calvert-Lewin received a red card. When Kavanagh was told by VAR to reconsider the decision, he first waved play on. The Everton striker was sent off after very little contact, much to Sean Dyche’s dismay and the surprise of the neutral spectators.

“If you want to slow-mo everything, you have to slow-mo everything,” said Dyche after the game. “There’s minor contact and in live time he [Kavanagh] doesn’t give anything, then they slow it down and everything looks worse.

“Every fan out there must be going, ‘What is the point?’ We all know the outcome, which is that [the referees] are going to agree with what they are being told. I don’t get all this delaying and looking at the screen for a minuscule chance they’ll turn it over. Why even bother?”

After the Toffees successfully challenged the red card, Calvert-Lewin’s three-match suspension was revoked. Kavanagh made a mistake, but that didn’t stop him from officiating Newcastle vs. Man City this weekend.

In September, Kavanagh played a pivotal role in the Magpies’ 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over City. Since then, he’s supervised United’s defeat to AFC Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

The 38-year-old will have Neil Davies and Simon Bennett on his team. Simon Long and Peter Bankes are on VAR duty. There is one more official, Tim Robinson.
