“We gave up two awful goals, but we scored two excellent goals.”

Following yet another road loss, Exeter City captain Pierce Sweeney remarked that the Grecians’ locker room was filled with angry faces. On Saturday, City lost 2-0 to Blackpool away from home. Albie Morgan scored both goals with long-range strikes.

For a significant portion of the day at Bloomfield Road, City kept the Tangerines at bay, but Exeter was punished by two outstanding plays and finishes. each goals were excellent strikes, although there mistakes were committed defensively in the build-up to each.

Halfway through the first half, Vil Sinisalo had transformed from villain to hero. After taking down Jordan Rhodes, the goalie made amends by saving the penalty kick. However, Morgan’s double just before halftime secured the victory for the play-off contenders.

Although City has performed better at St. James Park—seven of the last nine points are available—it hasn’t won on the road in more than four months. Eight losses and one draw over the previous nine away from home have contributed to City’s relegation struggle; they are currently in 20th place and just three points above the bottom four.

“They are a really good side, a big football club, and have the best home form in the league,” Sweeney said. “We put ourselves under a bit of pressure in the first half, giving sloppy passes away.

“They have good players, created chances, put the ball in the box and played good combinations, but little silly mistakes cost us, especially with the first goal. A brilliant strike but the buildup is disappointing from us and poor for the second goal. Two good finishes and we get punished.

“We created decent opportunities and we were putting them under a lot of pressure, had half chances, and if one goes in it is a different game. But we have a big game next week, have to take confidence, but it was two poor goals to give away but two really good strikes.”

City have a week off before they are next in action on Saturday at home to Cambridge United. That then begins a run of Saturday-Tuesday clashes, but the Irishman said that want to get back playing as soon as possible to put the loss behind them.

“I want to get back out there and the boys are the same,” he said. “There are a lot of frustrated bodies in the changing room. The games come thick and fast and have to keep the home form decent. We have picked up well over the last few weeks, but it is a game we have got to win and start climbing the table as quickly as we can.”
