On New Year’s Day, the Turkish international made his debut for City, playing 90 minutes for the first time since signing on loan from Galatasaray.

Enzo Maresca would like to give Yunus Akgun more playing time, but believes he is still “struggling” to understand English football.

Yunus played 90 minutes as a number 10 behind Tom Cannon in Leicester City’s 1-0 win over Huddersfield on New Year’s Day. It was only his sixth league appearance since signing on loan from Galatasaray.

Injuries have limited Maresca’s opportunities, but the 23-year-old confesses he is struggling to adjust to the speed and brutality of Championship game. While Yunus arrived at the King Power Stadium as a winger, Maresca has now realized that he is more comfortable in the center. But he may face even greater competition there, with Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, Wilfred Ndidi, Dennis Praet, and Cesare Casadei pushing for minutes.

Speaking in the days before handing Yunus 90 minutes against Huddersfield, Maresca said: “Yunus is struggling a little bit with the rhythm, probably because he said in Turkey the rhythm is a little bit low. Here it’s more quick, the pace of the game.

“He is struggling. He’s had a muscle problem, now it’s better. I like Yunus, I would like to give him more minutes, but he needs to adjust and understand how English football is, that it’s more physical.”

Yunus has always been energetic and committed in his performances, but this has yet to translate into significant engagement at the top of the pitch. He has yet to score for the club and has only one Championship assist for Dewsbury-Hall at Blackburn. He also assisted Kasey McAteer’s goal in the Carabao Cup against Liverpool.

He was eager to get started against Huddersfield, and he had three shots, which tied him for the most among City players. He did not, however, hit the target.
