Dundee United have made David Wotherspoon of Inverness Caledonian Thistle one of their top transfer targets as the Tangerines look to strengthen their Championship title challenge.

Wotherspoon will be a free agent in January.

Since signing a short-term contract with the Caley Jags in October, the St Johnstone veteran has scored five goals and provided one assist in 11 appearances.

The 33-year-old’s heroics in the Highlands, where he played under ex-Tannadice legend Duncan Ferguson, came after a summer stay training with Dunfermline Athletic.

Dundee United is reportedly leading the race to secure the services of David Wotherspoon as his contract with St Johnstone nears expiration in mid-January. The Tannadice club, led by manager Jim Goodwin, aims to strengthen its attacking options, and Wotherspoon is seen as a suitable candidate due to his experience and availability.

While Inverness has presented a competitive offer to retain the Canada internationalist, United is actively pursuing the versatile player, who can operate both behind the main striker and in wider positions.

Jim Goodwin has expressed confidence in securing quality signings within budgetary constraints, identifying promising targets to enhance the squad in the upcoming transfer window.

Former Hibernian player Wotherspoon left McDiarmid Park this summer after an illustrious 10 years with the Saintees, with ex-boss Steven MacLean declining to offer him a new contract.
The Bridge of Earn native is perhaps St Johnstone’s finest ever player, having won the Scottish Cup twice (2014, 2021) and the League Cup once (2021).

Another career highlight came when he played for Canada in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, coming on as a 76th-minute replacement in their last group game against Morocco.
