Manchester United’s loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground set a new record for the club.

Nottingham Forest won their first game against Manchester United in 29 years. Back then, Brian Clough was in charge of the East Midlands club, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s team triumphed.

The Red Devils crumbled under duress and conceded a pretty absurd counter-attack goal to lose the game after a lackluster first 45 minutes and a frankly shambolic second 45.

The strain is mounting on Erik ten Hag, who has finally finished their five-hour spree away from home but has suffered another humiliating setback.

United have lost 21 games in all competitions in 2023, which is only bettered by 28 defeats in 1930, 25 defeats in 1972, and 24 defeats in 1921.

Nottingham Forest v Manchester United - Premier League

United set a new record.

With the defeat in the East Midlands, the Red Devils have now lost their fifth game in December, a record that has not been broken since 1933.

Marcus Rashford’s goal came after a solid week for the Englishman, and despite being switched to center-forward, he appears to be back to his best, although this may be one of the game’s few positives.

Amad Diallo replaced Antony, who had been dreadful in the East Midlands, in the second half, and the Ivorian looked far more assured and flowing than the former Ajax winger.

Ten Hag’s career is undoubtedly under threat now, and the Dutchman may face some questions after INEOS’s 25% takeover of United is confirmed once the Premier League’s regulatory procedures are finished.

Ten Hag’s defining month

As we approach January and the winter transfer window, this might be a watershed moment in the Dutchman’s tenure at the club.

If the losses persist and the Red Devils battle for consistency, the fanbase will lose patience, especially since this season was supposed to be hard.

United is a long way from challenging for the title and is now fighting for a place in the Champions League.

Things must improve or the Dutchman will join the list of managers fired at Old Trafford following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
