Esse is a graduate of Millwall’s academy, coming from their under-18s straight into the first team during last season.

This will be Joe Edwards’ second game in command of the Lions, and his first at home, following his first game away at Sheffield Wednesday, which he won 4-0.

Millwall have brought in Edwards to take a different approach than previous manager Gary Rowett. Millwall’s manager will be looking to move the club up the Championship table, as they are only a few points away from the play-offs.

Edwards may be looking at the January transfer window to improve his squad, despite the fact that Millwall brought in several new players during the summer. The Millwall manager will have areas he wants to improve in, and as a result, he will know individuals who can do the job. However, there will be players currently at the club who will be aiming to impress, including wonderkid Romain Esse.

The midfielder has a very high ceiling at the football club and is regarded as a player who can go very far in the game, therefore there may come a time when speculation about his future arises. But the Lions should not panic, as they should adopt Leeds United’s current approach to Esse as a model.

What is Leeds United’s position on Archie Gray?

Archie Gray Leeds United

Gray has emerged as a significant player for Leeds this season, having progressed from the club’s academy and entered Daniel Farke’s first squad ambitions.

The teenager has impressed on multiple occasions this season, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Premier League clubs taking note.Liverpool was said to be interested in the player at first, with Leeds expecting an offer in the region of £40 million for the 17-year-old.

Crystal Palace and Everton were also reported to be interested in Gray. Borussia Dortmund, a Bundesliga giant, is also said to be interested. However, Leeds are holding hard in their transfer valuation, which Millwall may take to and learn from as they may face a similar issue with Esse in the future.

Millwall midfielder Esse has been a key player in the club’s first team this season, playing in all 16 league games, starting one in the defeat to Norwich City. Despite only grabbing one goal in his combined appearances, Esse is impressing as he gets more minutes.
He has an expected goal ratio of 0.9 and an expected assist ratio of 0.5, and has a goal contribution of 0.20 per 90 minutes he plays. Esse has made 18 progressive passes this season, with 137 passes attempted and 101 completed, resulting in a completion rate of 73.7%.
Although Esse is still learning first-team football, he is highly rated at the club and expected to be a mainstay in the first team for years to come. Millwall will have to watch what Leeds are doing in relation to Gray and use that as a benchmark for Esse if he ever does. With Edwards’ support, Esse will be hoping for a boost from Edwards’.
