Birmingham City is showing interest in Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland as Wayne Rooney considers a reunion.
Michael Beale’s summer spending hasn’t exactly been successful thus far, it’s fair to say.
As Rangers added players like Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, and Jose Cifuentes throughout the summer, Beale assumed the lead.
Although Rangers haven’t really seen their best versions of those players yet, there has been one bright spot among the summer additions.
One of the few Rangers players to stand out this year has been goalkeeper Jack Butland, who is currently drawing interest.
Jack Butland wanted by Birmingham City
According to a recent rumor in The Sun, Butland is desired by Birmingham City, and Wayne Rooney is open to a trade.
Birmingham’s new manager is Rooney after the club’s American owners opted to fire John Eustace.
Rooney supposedly wants to bring Butland back to St. Andrew’s and sign a goalkeeper.
Butland and Rooney are acquainted thanks to their involvement with the England team, and the new Birmingham manager appears to be considering a bold move.
The Blues are eager to offload high-earning goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, but Rangers will undoubtedly seek compensation for Butland, who they signed this summer.
Butland surely won’t leave Rangers
Butland has a long history with Birmingham; he first joined their ranks in 2007 and later became one of the best young players in their starting lineup.
There is an emotional draw there because Butland joined Stoke City in 2013, but he later returned to Birmingham on loan.
In the future, returning to Birmingham might be appealing, but it won’t be happening anytime soon.
Butland has long desired the stability that comes with being the best stopper in the league and has finally found it at Rangers.
Just months after signing him, Rangers wouldn’t want to let Butland leave, and they would undoubtedly be able to force Birmingham out of any deal.
We just don’t see how Rangers or Butland would benefit from this move right now, and we don’t think Rooney would succeed in moving in January or even in the summer of 2024.
