Jack Clarke has enjoyed his finest start to a season and has been perhaps the top player in the Championship through the first eight games. One thing is certain: the Sunderland winger is currently the top dribbler in the English second division.

Clarke’s meteoric rise has surprised many fans, who were dissatisfied by his original loan stay during the Black Cats’ promotion-winning season from League One.

The attacker scored once and assisted three times before Sunderland extended his contract for a seven-figure fee. Clarke’s performance in the Championship improved dramatically, with nine goals and 12 assists as Sunderland advanced to the play-offs.

Clarke was the subject of multiple bids from Burnley, and Sunderland fans were relieved when they were able to keep him, and they will be even more pleased with his ‘great’ start to the season.

The 22-year-old has already scored seven goals in only eleven Championship games this season, according to WhoScored, and he has also completed the most dribbles (31) and attempted the most (66).

Clarke completed 89 dribbles last season and is on track to surpass that total this season.

Jack Clarke is far too talented for the Championship.

Sunderland’s Jack Clarke is a constant threat down the left flank and has vastly improved in front of goal.

Unfortunately, Wearside residents aren’t the only ones who are aware of these statistics. Interest in the attacker is building once more, and Tony Mowbray may find it difficult to maintain hold of him.

Losing Clarke in January would be a tragedy, and I don’t believe it is necessary. The former Tottenham Hotspur man appears to be enjoying his time at the SoL, and I believe he would be willing to assist us in reaching the play-offs.

If we do not gain promotion to the Premier League, I believe we can accept that he will depart for the top tier on his own – something he has certainly earned.
