Derek McInnes, manager of Kilmarnock, believes Rangers can catch Celtic in the league title battle, amid talk that he could take over at Ibrox.

Following the defeat against Aberdeen, Michael Beale was fired, with the club behind the Hoops by seven points in the Scottish Premiership this season. Interim manager Steven Davis will try to raise the side in their Europa League meeting with Aris Limassol before facing in-form St Mirren before the domestic season is put on hold for the international break.

McInnes, who led Kilmarnock to promotion and restored them as a top division club throughout his time, has been regarded as a favourite to replace the Londoner alongside Frank Lampard and Kevin Muscat. The former Ibrox midfielder also found success at Pittodrie, with the Light Blues previously offered him the opportunity to manage the club.

He turned them down at the time, but McInnes believes there is a path back into the title battle with Celtic for Gers if he takes over at the second time. On TNT Sports, he stated of the decision to fire Beale, “I think those heady days of reaching a European final and winning the Scottish Cup you would have to question the recruitment.”

“Mangers live and die by their recruitment, rightly, it’s important at a club like Rangers. They have moved on players for a long period of time people thought had to be moved on.

“There was a lot of optimism in the summer. For a manager you have to have three key relationships to survive. A relationship with your fans, a relationship with your players and the board. If you lose any of those and certainly all three there is only one outcome”

“There was maybe a lack of belief coming from the stands, even this early on. It was ‘here we go again, we are going to lose the league to Celtic again’ – and it’s still early in the season. Rangers can maybe address that and Michael Beale has lost his job, but there are still issues that need to be addressed.”
