Despite his outstanding form for Newcastle United, Anthony Gordon has been left out of Gareth Southgate’s England side

Despite his stellar recent play for Newcastle United, Anthony Gordon was not selected for Gareth Southgate’s England team. After injuries to Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, the winger, who won the club’s Player of the Month award for September, was anticipated to receive his first senior call-up, but he will instead watch the matches against Australia and Italy from home.

Nick Pope, a teammate from Newcastle, was also left off the squad for the second time in a row, and Callum Wilson is currently out with a hamstring injury. Only Kieran Trippier, a star for the Magpies, was selected by Southgate.

It’s unclear exactly why Gordon hasn’t received the go-ahead. The former Everton winger has improved his goal total while playing in black and white and is providing the kind of selfless, hardworking off-the-ball work that would be a tremendous benefit for Southgate’s team. Instead, Jarrod Bowen, Marcus Rashford, and Jack Grealish will be responsible for controlling England’s left side. Saka, who is dealing with an injury, is also included.

Gordon, who has already established himself on the international stage while playing for the under-21s over the summer, will find it frustrating. The announcement made on Thursday, nevertheless, has a good side for Newcastle and Eddie Howe.

Harvey Barnes’ unfortunate injury has left Newcastle’s attack a little strained. Gordon, who perhaps needed a little respite at Sheffield United, was forced to enter the game early and has since played in each of the games that have come after.

Gordon may easily burn out early in the season, which is a concern, especially after forgoing a preseason rest and returning early to concentrate on earning a spot in Howe’s starting XI. He will now enjoy a well-deserved holiday during the international break after being suspended prevented him from playing in the match against West Ham. Gordon’s next appearance will probably be on October 21 against Crystal Palace after a grueling stretch of games.

“He’s had an outstanding start to the season,” the Newcastle boss said of Gordon last month. “What’s pleased me most is his fitness levels and athleticism is really coming to the fore. He’s adding goals and assists which is great to see.”

While Gordon’s physical fitness is one of his strongest qualities, he also appears to be getting better when he has the ball in his hands, is in front of goal, and is defending without the ball. No Newcastle player has exerted more pressure recently.

There can only be a certain amount of time that Howe’s key players can be abandoned by Southgate now that Newcastle is back at the top table in Europe. Now competing against Europe’s best are Gordon, Sean Longstaff, and even Dan Burn.

After all, Southgate wants that after whining earlier this year about England’s presence in the Champions League. We really come in behind Brazil and Portugal on the list of Champions League minutes this year, he stated.

“If breaking into the team is the foundation, the Champions League and the upper echelons of the Premier League are the finishing school.”
