• Sheffield Wednesday have taken former Nottingham Forest striker Lyle Taylor on trial.
  •  The Owls already have several forward options, but their lack of goals this season suggests they could benefit from adding another striker to their squad.
  •  Taylor, although not a long-term solution at 33 years old, could be a valuable addition due to his proven goalscoring record at this level and the fact that he would be available on a free transfer.
According to Xisco Munoz, who verified this to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday have taken former Nottingham Forest striker Lyle Taylor on trial ahead of a prospective contract offer.

Since being released by Steve Cooper’s side earlier this summer, the 33-year-old has been a free agent, having been surplus to requirements at the City Ground for some years.

He appeared destined to be a major first-team player for Chris Hughton, even scoring against Coventry City on the first day of the 2021/22 season.

But he fell out of favor under Cooper and was loaned out to Birmingham City for the second part of that season, when he shone for Lee Bowyer’s side, scoring five goals in 14 league games.

But he didn’t make a single senior competitive appearance last season and with that, it came as no surprise when Forest opted to release him following an unsuccessful two years there.

Although the Reds secured promotion to the Premier League at the end of 2021/22, he didn’t really play a part in that because he was with Birmingham during the second half of that season.

What forward options do Sheffield Wednesday already have?

Taylor will now be aiming for success elsewhere, whether at Hillsborough or elsewhere.

When healthy, the Owls already have a number of forward options, with Lee Gregory, Michael Smith, Callum Paterson, and Ashley Fletcher all capable of playing as strikers.

Mallik Wilks and Josh Windass have also played as strikers, though the former would be stronger in a front two than up top on his own.

Despite having these possibilities, Paterson has played on the right side at times, Wilks frequently on the flank, and Windass can operate as an advanced midfielder, which is why Xisco may be looking to bolster his forward department despite getting Fletcher in the summer.

It should be noted that the Owls have only scored five goals in seven league games, and if that trend continues, they would profit greatly from having another forward in their roster.

Munoz confirmed Taylor was on trial, saying, “Right now he’s an option, and we’ll evaluate whether he can give something special for the team and help the squad.”

Would Sheffield Wednesday benefit from signing Lyle Taylor?
Taylor, a proven goal scorer at this level, may be a fantastic acquisition.

He’s definitely not a long-term option at 33, but he could be a player worth having on a one-year deal.

The one disadvantage of this prospective signing is that it will most likely take him some time to get back to full health, which isn’t ideal for a team that needs him right away.

They can’t afford to take any chances with him, and it’s a shame he might not be ready right immediately.

Taylor, on the other hand, is someone worth getting on a free transfer and given his goal scoring record.
