In response to “big rumors” that Newcastle is trying to recruit Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton, Don Hutchison joked that this could be “silly season.”

On June 3, the former Toffees midfield player responded on Twitter to rumors that the Magpies are considering signing two big players from his previous teams, with ties to West Ham star Jarrod Bowen.

He posted a gif reaction of Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman from American Psycho and implied that deals to sign the two English forwards would be a huge statement in the Northeast.

“Big Rumors Newcastle wants DCL at Everton and J Bowen at West Ham,” Hutchison said. Perhaps this is simply a foolish season, but…

Could Sean Dyche lose star Everton striker to Eddie Howe?

After suffering injuries for two seasons, Calvert-Lewin returned to play much more frequently under Sean Dyche last season.

However, despite the club starting talks about an extension, he only has a year left on his current deal and has not yet agreed to one [BBC Sport, 31 May].

Even though the Toffees signed Youssef Chermiti and Beto a year ago and will only begin paying for them this month, Dyche would suffer a great deal if he lost his best striker.

There is a possible successor identified if he moves to St. James’ Park, but there will be competition.

Although an extension and a sale would help Everton get the best price for him, Calvert-Lewin might be reluctant to commit his future to the team due to uncertainty over the ownership situation.

The BBC’s Giulia Bould (3 June) stated that there won’t be a fire sale at Goodison Park this summer, but the club is reportedly in need of assistance in balancing the books. Moreover, a financially strapped team might not be able to bear the danger of losing Calvert-Lewin for free in a year.

It remains to be seen, though, how much Newcastle could afford to spend in comparison to what would make it worthwhile to cash in at Everton given their own profit and sustainability worries.
