Flynn Downes’ remarks regarding his time at Southampton on loan have drawn a lot of attention. The midfielder for the Hammers has been very nice about the South Coast team, but before taking the player’s remarks too literally, consider your options.

While acknowledging that he is unsure of his long-term plans, Downes stated that he has liked his time at Southampton and that he would be eager to rejoin the team the following season.

When asked how long he would like to stay at St. Mary’s by the local media, Downes said, “Of course.” This place is amazing to me. I adore the gaffer. I adore the personnel. I adore this location. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see. Not much will be known to me until I return to West Ham. We’ll observe what transpires there.

Since joining Southampton on loan in August, the midfield player has excelled, but his stated wish to stay should be viewed cautiously.

As a supporter of West Ham, Downes’ tenure with the team was marred by his time spent under David Moyes, who obviously did not think highly of the former Ipswich midfield player. But after working with Julen Lopetegui for a few training sessions, Flynn might discover that his perspective on West Ham changes rapidly.

Downes looks to have a lot of the traits that make a Lopetegui team, and the club told C&H last week that he should be joining the Hammers for preseason training. The player, who has obviously benefited from a fantastic loan stay, may possibly have a future at West Ham.

Everyone can see that Downes is a step above the Championship, and he has ample time left to continue getting better. The midfield of the team is well-stocked, with Lewis Orford and Freddie Potts certain to make significant progress in the coming year. Even yet, I haven’t given up on Flynn as a West Ham player just yet, and his comments to a local South Coast newspaper haven’t convinced me either. I wouldn’t have expected a young man of his exceptional character to be anything less than kind, polite, and complimentary. He is still, at heart, a Hammer, though.
