Sunderland’s 1-0 victory over play-off-chasing West Brom on Saturday built on two good draws. The Black Cats’ Pierre Ekwah secured the winning goal, capitalizing on the dismissal of Baggies’ leading scorer Brandon Thomas-Asante moments earlier.
While Mike Dodds’ team may not have much at stake in terms of league standing, there is a strong desire among the players to close off the season strong. With just three games remaining in the season, The Sunderland Echo has compiled the following headlines ahead of Millwall’s visit to the Stadium of Light on Saturday:
Ellis Taylor hopes to get 90 minutes under his belt for Sunderland’s under-21s side before the end of the season after returning from an injury setback.
The 21-year-old, whose contract is scheduled to expire this summer, made his Premier League 2 debut at the Stadium of Light against Middlesbrough on the bench, marking his first appearance since January.
“Playing at the stadium is always nice,” Taylor said to the team’s website following the 2-1 loss to Boro. “As the season draws to a close, I hope to accumulate more and more playing time, regain that momentum, and hopefully close out the season strong.”
Still at Stamford Bridge
Reims boss Will Still, who has continuously been linked with the Sunderland job, was spotted at Stamford Bridge recently.
Still caught the eye of football circles and fans on social media after becoming relatively successful at a young age and admitting to honing some of his skills on the popular video game Football Manager. His club Reims are reportedly eyeing up replacements for coach should he depart this summer.
Rivals sack manager
Rotherham, a championship team, fired head coach Leam Richardson after barely four months in office. When the Millers were eight points from safety in December of last year, Richardson took over as head coach in place of Matt Taylor, but he was unable to keep the team in the hunt. After losing 1-0 to Plymouth earlier this month, Rotherham was officially relegated. They still have three league games left against Bristol City, Cardiff, and Birmingham.
