John McGinn should be named Aston Villa Player of the Season ahead of Ollie Watkins and Douglas Luiz, according to Dan Bardell.

It has been a hugely positive campaign which sees the Villans in the hunt for a Champions League spot thanks to some excellent individual performances.

This has seen Ollie Watkins and Douglas Luiz, amongst others, be singled out for praise for some standout moments under Unai Emery.

Despite this, Bardell has picked out McGinn for his positive impact on the team this season above other more obvious choices.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I think he’s been the heartbeat and the leader of the team. He’s played every position he could possibly play, even had a game at left back in the Carabao Cup.

I think for his consistency and the impact he has on the team when he plays well, I think he’s just been a tremendous player for Villa, the leader, he’s taken on the captain responsibility really, really well. He’s grown into a magnificent captain for this football club and he’s just been integral.

“It would be harsh on Luiz and Watkins as well but I think at the moment, McGinn would get my Player of the Season vote because I think he’s been absolutely brilliant.”

He has gone from strength to strength, season on season which now sees him stand out despite the level of players signed.

He was unexpectedly named as captain by Steven Gerrard but has taken this in his stride and become an asset under Emery’s tutelage.

This season the Scotland international has six goals and four assists in the Premier League, added to by three in the Conference League [FotMob].

There are intangible assets that McGinn has which provide the Villans with the ability to drive forward where possible.

It must be said that Watkins’ goals have been integral in firing Villa up the table and towards the Champions League.

Luiz has been superb and proved himself to be one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the league with nine goals and five assists [FotMob].

There is reason to award the Player of the Season to many Villa players but Bardell is clearly very set on the skipper taking it home.
