Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson is on the mend, according to Paddy McCarthy, after the former England manager missed his team’s defeat at Villa Park due to illness.

McCarthy claims that Hodgson felt ‘a touch ill’ between breakfast and Palace’s pre-match dinner.

‘He is feeling better, and we are hopeful that he will continue to feel better and return to us sooner rather than later,’ he said. We spoke with him prior to the game and will speak with him again afterward.

Roy handled all of the planning. He felt a little ill after breakfast and before the pre-match dinner, and that’s when we found out. We kept working on our preparations.’

Villa’s win made it ten in a row in all competitions, despite missing ample chances to seal the game well before it ended.

In the end, Palace were penalized for their many attempts to run down the clock, as referee Darren England added 17 minutes, during which Villa scored twice.

‘We were playing more with our hearts than our wits in the last 20 minutes, and sometimes you need that,’ remarked manager Unai Emery. We deserved to win in the end.
