In the Black Cats’ final eight games of the season, one Sunderland player is predicted to be “massive.”

With 13 points separating them from sixth place, Sunderland has effectively run out of chances to salvage their play-off chase.

However, Mike Dodds’ team still aims to finish the season strongly despite facing setbacks, having lost six of their last seven Championship games. The absence of Jack Clarke has notably affected Sunderland’s attacking prowess, with the team managing to score only four goals since his injury. Furthermore, Luke O’Nien’s suspension in the last two matches has led to a younger squad, presenting significant challenges.

During the international break, Sunderland will focus on recuperating and improving for the final stretch of the season. There is hope for a significant improvement, especially with the potential return to full fitness of Corry Evans, who recently played 45 minutes in the U21s’ match against Newcastle United. We Are Sunderland journalist Matty Hewitt praised Evans’ performance, anticipating that his contribution could be pivotal for the Black Cats in the remaining weeks of the campaign.

“He’s just a seasoned pro, experienced head in that role. Some of the passes he was able to pick… it was quite interesting, I didn’t think he looked like a player who had been out for over a year. I though the dictated the play when he could.

“If they can keep him fit between now and the end of the season then he’s going to be massive.”
