According to a Premier League independent commission investigation, Nottingham Forest turned down three bids from Brentford for Brennan Johnson last summer before agreeing to accept one from Tottenham.
In recent days, Johnson’s transfer has been a contentious topic of conversation when Forest was docked four points for violating profit and sustainability rules by £34.5 million.
The Midlands club was reportedly incensed that the £47.5 million transfer fee they received from Tottenham for Johnson on the day of the summer transfer deadline last summer was not deducted, according to a recent article from The Mirror.
Forest allegedly argued that while they missed the clear deadline of June 30 set by the Premier League to compute financial results, they only did not do so in order to get the highest possible fee for the winger.
Brentford failed with three Brennan Johnson bids
According to the independent commission’s findings, Forest rejected three different offers for Johnson from Brentford last summer before finally accepting Spurs’ offer.
Their findings revealed that the Bees had offers of £32.5m and £35m for the Wales international turned down on July 21 and July 24 respectively, before they made a final £40m bid on August 28 which was also sent back.
The report says that Forest transfer chief Loannis Vrentzos was then told by club owner Evangelos Marinakis to sell the 22-year-old, with the club later accepting the Lilywhites’ £47.5m offer.
The Premier League are setting a strong precedent here by making it clear that no leeway will be given to those who fall foul of the PSR calculations by the agreed-upon date.
This means that Chelsea would have to cash in on Conor Gallagher by the end of June this summer and cannot afford to wait until the end of the window, which opens up the possibility of Tottenham landing the 23-year-old on the cheap.
