Smallbone swiftly found Adams after Harry Winks lost the ball in his own penalty area, and Mads Hermansen made a great last-ditch stop.

Adams took advantage of another mistake by Callum Doyle, allowing the Saints striker to feed Sam Edozie, who dinked over Hermansen.

The home crowd responded, and for a brief moment, it appeared that the home team would equalize. But Martin’s new-look defense let Winks find Malvididi, who found Wilfred Ndidi, who displayed great footwork to restore the Foxes’ two-goal lead on the stroke of half-time.

With Southampton sending more players forward, Leicester put the game out of reach with a fourth goal.

Mavididi took hold of the ball just outside the Leicester penalty area and sprinted the length of the field to score into the bottom corner in front of the delighted away fans, putting Leicester in first place.

Southampton’s agony was compounded in the dying seconds of stoppage time when Sulemana was sent off for a late challenge on James Justin.
